Fake “verify you're human” pages

A page that asks you to press keys or paste something to prove you're not a robot, or to fix an error. No real check or fix does that: it runs their program on your computer.

A page

Verify you are human. 1. Press Windows + R. 2. Press Ctrl + V. 3. Press Enter.

What it looks like

A page

Verify you are human. 1. Press Windows + R. 2. Press Ctrl + V. 3. Press Enter.

A page on a Mac

This page couldn't load. To fix it, open Terminal and paste the code we copied for you.

A video call on a meeting link you were sent

Your microphone isn't working. To fix it, press Windows + R, then Ctrl + V, then Enter.

Examples. The names and amounts change; the shape doesn't.

How to spot one

  1. Instructions to press keys, open a box like Run or Terminal, or paste. No real site asks you to paste anything to prove you're human, or to fix a page, a call or your sound.

  2. Something was copied for you. The page put text in your clipboard without asking.

  3. It can appear on a site you know. Real websites get broken into and show these.

What to do

  1. Close the page. Don't press the keys, and don't paste anything.

  2. Need that site? Come back to it later, from your bookmarks or by typing its address.

  3. Still not sure? Check the link. We open its link on a phone and a computer, not yours, and tell you what it is.

Already pressed those keys or pasted something?

Why it works

Real “I'm not a robot” checks are everywhere now, so one more feels normal. But pasting runs their command on your computer, as if you typed it yourself.
